The most Northern mountain passage of South Tirol connects the Ahrn Valley with Salzburg.
It is possible that the pass was used in the Bronze age, for certain it was used already in the time of the romans. In the middle age the pass achieved a great importance, since it was the shortest way between Salzburg and Venice. There existed a regular trade with the Salzburger white gold (salt) to the south and spirits and wine in the direction north.
